Dam spills over bank with early Wet
20 January
Darwin River Dam is spilling over with recent rainfall.
Power and Water Corporation General Manager Water Services Paul Heaton said this was unusual this early in the year.
"We usually see these high levels towards the end of the Wet Season, over the past 10 years the dam has usually filled in February or March,” he said.
“With this season's rainfall, water was lapping at the dam rim last Tuesday and trickling over the edge last Wednesday."
Darwin River Dam had 662mm rain in December 2009, up 200mm on December 2008 figures.
A further 400mm has fallen so far this month.
"This rain puts us in an enviable position compared with the rest of the country, where some dam levels are 20% or less," Mr Heaton said.
"It is a precious resource for the Dry Season, where we do not have rain for months."
