Coloured and dirty water
05 Feb 2010
Weather can stir up the water in Darwin River Dam reservoir which may cause coloured or dirty water.Coloured water
Between November and May, heavy rainfall may cause increased levels of natural iron and manganese to enter the water supply, colouring the water yellowish/brownish. You might notice this coloured water in white baths and basins.
Coloured water has been tested and is safe to drink.
Dirty water
Dirty water is a different matter. Iron and manganese can settle in water pipes and may cause red/brown dirty water, particularly in the Dry Season.
Power and Water has ongoing programs in various centres to reduce the corrosivity of water and flush pipelines to remove dirty water.
If you experience dirty water, you should run at least two taps for a few minutes until the water clears.
Dirty water can be used in the garden.
