Power supply Update #1

12 June 2009

It’s been just four months since Mervyn Davies handed down his final report into the Northern Territory’s power networks and Power and Water has already achieved significant progress with the introduction of a series of measures to improve maintenance and training.

Power and Water employees have been working across Darwin to improve the performance of Power Networks’ 26 major substations, often through the night to ensure minimal
disruption to customers.

These teams are being equipped and trained with the latest test equipment, including thermal imaging technology, to test thecondition of the assets in each substation, and step through an analysis of its operation to accepted national standards.

Milestones achieved by these Power and Water employees to date include a complete risk assessment of every major substation in the electricity network, the introduction of specialist training for staff, the procurement of new testing equipment and infrastructure at key sites such as the Casuarina Zone Substation.

The Casuarina site is the focus of intensive efforts to return the network to peak operating efficiency, according to Project Manager, Casuarina Restoration, Christina Camilleri.
“We have achieved some significant advances at Casuarina since February but the big steps will be taken in coming months,” Christina says. One of the advances includes installing feeders into the new temporary switchboard that links homes across Nakara, Bradshaw, Brinkin and Jingili to improve reliability in these areas.

While across the Territory, crews have repaired equipment at the Katherine Substation and completed maintenance and testing in the Tennant Creek switchyard. Maintenance and testing has also occurred at key substation sites in Alice Springs.

Employees have received more advanced training in testing and maintenance practices for high voltage equipment and completion of these tests at a number of major substations has now ensured that employees can access these sites safely during operation.
