National Water Week events

16 Oct 2009

This week is National Water Week (18 - 24 October) and this year's theme is 'Securing our water future'.

National Water Week 2009Power and Water is working to secure the future of the Territory's water supply by increasing the capacity of Darwin River Dam and the Alice Springs borefield. We also offer customers a range of water conservation materials such as an online water use calculator and water saving tips.

As part of National Water Week we are hosting and sponsoring a number of events:

  • Alan Whyte, Area Manager, Alice Springs and Yulara speaking at the 'Securing Our Water Future' public forum in Alice Springs on Monday 19 October.
  • Hosting industry meetings in Alice Springs (21 October) and Darwin (22 October) with Chief Executive Officer of the Water Industry Alliance, Mr Joe Flynn as guest speaker.
  • Sponsoring the NT branch of the Australian Water Association's Water in the Bush Conference on Friday 23 October in Darwin.
  • An open day at the Water Reclamation Plant in Alice Springs on Saturday 24 October.
  • Providing information at the Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport (NRETAS) market stall in Alice Springs (Sunday 18 October), Palmerston Shopping Centre (21 October) and Casuarina Square (Saturday 24 October) stalls.

National Water Week is a good opportunity for all Territorians to think about reducing their water use. On average, we use more than twice as much water as other Australians and this puts undue stress on our water supply.

There are a number of things we can all do to reduce water use in and around the home.

To start, try saving 10 buckets of water a day, it’s easy. Use the plug when rinsing vegetables, reduce showering times and turn off the tap when brushing teeth – they’re simple things we can all do to save 10 buckets a day.

For further ideas on saving 10 buckets a day, to view our water wise publications or information about rebates go to our save page, visit us at one of our customer service centres or call us on 1800 245 092.
