Be Waterwise and save in the Centre

Power and Water is encouraging residents in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek to save water and money by taking advantage of the NT Waterwise Central Australia Rebate Scheme.

Power and Water has contributed funds towards the scheme, that includes adding $100 to existing rebates on the ‘big ticket’ items of swimming pool covers, washing machines and dual flush toilets and $200 to retrofit dual flush toilets by qualified GreenPlumbers®.

 

The Scheme, launched by the NT Government Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport, in 2006, is focussed on encouraging the community in Central Australia to replace older technologies, fittings and fixtures with newer, more water efficient ones to reduce overall household water use and costs.

In the Centre, Territorians use as much as three times the water as people living in most Australian Capital Cities. Many people believe that because our water comes from underground in this region it’s limitless. This is not case. It takes hundreds of years for the aquifer to re-charge if there is ongoing, good rainfall and in the face of rapid climate change, there are no guarantees.
