All in a day’s work – 50 metres above the Elizabeth River

24 June 2009

A joint maintenance and training exercise will take place more than 50 metres above the Elizabeth River today when Power and Water employees will hang suspended in a powered bosun’s chair on one of the 132kV high voltage lines.

Two, 132kV powerlines from Channel Island Power Station carry the main electricity supply to Hudson’s Creek and from there out to the wider Darwin area.

One of these two 132kV lines will be de-energised for the highly specialised operation of replacing spacers and dampers along the 600-metre section of power line.

The spacers help to stop powerlines clashing together in high winds and the dampers to control excessive vibration of the lines.  While the power lines are inspected each year, often by helicopter, maintenance and replacement of spacers and dampers is only carried out when necessary so this work will provide staff an opportunity to gain valuable experience and training.

About 14 staff will be involved in various aspects of the operation. Crews will be on the towers, in the bosun’s chair, on the ground and in a safety boat on the river.
