New transmission water main at Palmerston

18 December 2008

Palmerston is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia with an increasing demand for water services as housing and industry develops in the area.

To meet this demand, Power and Water is installing a new 4.2 kilometre transmission water main as part of its 2008 Capital Works Program. The main will extend from Howard Springs Road to Temple Terrace, then along Temple Terrace from the Stuart Highway to Roystonia Avenue.

The rate of growth in the area as new residential developments are progressed is outstripping the capacity of the existing water main infrastructure and the new main will carry a much greater volume of water to the Palmerston Water Tower. From the water tower, water is distributed throughout the network.

Power and Water carried out an environmental risk assessment for the project and implemented an Environment Management Plan (EMP) as required by the Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport (NRETAS).

Special care is being taken at the Mitchell Creek crossing to ensure minimal erosion by implementing extensive rehabilitation works. Power and Water will be meeting with Greening Australia next week to work out a revegetation plan.

All approvals have been obtained from the relevant land owners with the new main located on vacant Crown land adjacent to other services such as high voltage and Telstra optic fibre cables.

The main will consist of 1300 metres of 750-millimetre diameter Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pipe and 1900 metres of 1000 millimetre diameter MSCL pipe including fittings and valves. A pipe supply contract for $5.1 million was awarded to Tyco Water in March 2008 to supply all of the pipe and fittings required to construct the new main.

A pipe installation contract for $4.1 million was awarded to local company, DAC Enterprises, for the installation of the new main and construction started in September. Works are scheduled for completion early in the new year.
