Construction Awards
15 August 2008
Power and Water Corporation’s sponsorship program has again sponsored the Territory Construction Association (TCA) Awards with the aim of supporting organisations with wide-reaching benefit to Territorians and to acknowledge and recognise the achievements of their members.
In an address at the recent TCA Awards ceremony in Darwin, Jim Bamber, General Manager, Retail, noted the rapid change and growth in the Territory and the impact on the operations of both power and Water and the construction industry.
He said “Our joint customers don’t really want to know how the water arrives at the turn of the tap, the power at the flick of a switch or what happens when they flush the toilet – they just want it to happen.
“Both our industries are facing similar challenges - from the ability to attract and retain skilled tradespeople, fluctuating costs, the availability of supplies or meeting new environmental requirements. However, I believe both industries are providing innovative solutions for our customers”.
He went on to outline just some of Power and Water’s major infrastructure projects including the $10m water reuse project in Alice Springs, encouraging the uptake of solar energy, undergrounding of power and the new Frances Bay Substation to increase capacity and reliability for the CBD.
In terms of the two industries working more closely together, Power and Water is introducing changes to make the job designers, certifiers, plumbers and electricians easier with a review of codes to make them more standardised across the Territory.
In closing, Mr Bamber congratulated all finalists and winners of the Construction Association Awards and made special mention of Power and Water linesman apprentice, Richard Baldock, who was again named Territory Construction Association Apprentice of the Year.
