The 2012 Power and Water Melaleuca Awards for environmental excellence are open for submissions.
In their 10th year the Melaleuca Awards recognise environmental achievers who have found clever ways to reduce waste and use of water and energy.
Categories are open to individuals, businesses, community groups, schools and local and Territory government departments.
Winners receive a locally crafted Melaleuca trophy, certificate and financial reward - value up to $4000 depending on category as well as use of Melaleuca Award winners' web button, email signature and logo.
The 2011 small business category winner, Fryerfuels, is a great example of how businesses can build a viable business out of environmental sustainability. Started by three chefs, Fryerfuels has been in operation for four years. The team seized an opportunity to turn waste oil from the hospitality industry to produce biodiesel that can be used in most diesel engines.
Fryerfuels’ biodiesel complies with Australian, European and US fuel standards. It is non-toxic and biodegradable and has a lower flash point than petroleum based diesel. The fuel has a shelf life of about six months, which is double the accepted fuel industry shelf life standard.
There are nine awards presented:
