Power crews operating during the wet season

25 Jan 2012

Power and Water crews have been kept busy today following strong winds and severe weather conditions which caused outages for customers from Dundee to the city and suburbs.

General Manager Power Networks Bertram Birk said four crews across Darwin and the rural area have repaired fallen and damaged powerlines as well as fixing infrastructure damaged by a reversing truck in Humpty Doo.

The truck brought down powerlines causing outages for customers in Humpty Doo, Bees Creek and surrounds at around 7am this morning.

Power and Water has reinforced warnings about staying clear of fallen powerlines in the wake of severe storms or third party damage.

"Fallen powerlines, including your house service line, may look harmless, but they could be deadly. Always treat them as live. Keep others away and report them to by calling 000 or our emergency line on 1800 245 090," said Bertram Birk.

"This is a timely reminder that we should all check our storm and cyclone planning, refer to the relevant authorities for the latest information on preparations and visit Storm and Cyclone centre," he said.

If the service line to your house has been damaged, you will need to obtain a Certificate of Compliance from a registered electrician before Power and Water can restore power to your property.

Power and Water has an extensive tree trimming program in place all year round to minimise the chance of damage to powerlines and asks community members to keep an eye out for any vegetation growing too close.
