Discoloured water update

07 Feb 2012

Residents in Darwin, Palmerston and the rural area may be noticing discoloured water over the last couple of weeks.

During periods of significant rainfall it is not unusual to experience discoloured water due to the increased mixing of naturally occurring materials such as iron or manganese. This is particularly evident during the wet season, between November and May.

Recent squally, wet weather occurring over Darwin River Reservoir has led to a stirring up at the reservoir.

Over recent days these events have led to drinking water appearing yellow to brown in colour.

Typical of all water supply reservoirs, naturally occurring minerals are normally contained at the base of the reservoir and are sometimes drawn into the water supply.

Each week Darwin’s water supply is sampled and tested for bacteria that indicate whether harmful organisms may be present. All recent results have not identified any concerns.

Elevated levels of iron, manganese and colour are more a nuisance issue and may lead to laundry staining. Elevated iron levels may also give the water a metallic taste.

Power and Water anticipates the discoloured water will reduce significantly over the next week or two.
