Woolner Substation construction underway

20 Sep 2011

Power and Water Corporation has commenced construction at the site of the new Woolner Zone Substation.

Power and Water Corporation General Manager Power Networks Bertram Birk said that the new Woolner Zone Substation will replace the existing facility in Snell Street which is approaching the end of its operational life. The new substation, located in Bishop Street, Winnellie, will feed power to the suburbs of Winnellie, Fannie Bay, Parap, Stuart Park and The Gardens. It will also support the City, Casuarina and Berrimah zone substations.

“The Woolner Zone Substation uses modern gas insulated circuit breakers and will have all equipment housed indoors,” said Mr Birk. Gas insulated circuit breakers are more compact and operate noiselessly providing benefits for suburban use.

“Having a contract in place with a local company to supply switchgear equipment shortens the supply chain lead time. It also allows Power and Water to test the equipment progressively, saving time with on-site testing,” he said.

Power and Water has recently completed a two-year program to upgrade and repair several zone substations including finalising a major upgrade at the Casuarina Zone Substation. GHD are the design (civil and electrical) and project management consultants with Wolphers Grahl Pty Ltd currently undertaking civil works.

Civil construction at the Woolner Zone Substation is due for completion at the beginning of 2012 with electrical works to follow. Decommissioning and removal of the Snell Street Substation is expected by the end 2013.Woolner Zone Substation - Senior Project Manager Peter Kwong from PWC and Project Manager Bill Kmon of GHD
