Tender awarded for Weddell Set 3

02 Mar 2011

A tender for a third gas turbine at Weddell Power Station was recently awarded and once installed, will increase the combined Darwin-Katherine generation capacity to 440 megawatts.

GE will supply the third 43 megawatt generator for the Weddell Power Station.

Power and Water’s General Manager Generation Ian Pratt said that this continued development ensures Weddell Power Station maintains its status as one of the largest electricity generation projects in the Northern Territory in over 20 years.

The third unit, which is due for completion in 2012, makes Weddell a $124 million project and to date, more than 40 Territory companies have contributed.

“The third set will increase potential capacity for Darwin and Palmerston’s power supply to a total of 440 megawatts,” Mr Pratt said.

“This is part of a Territory-wide generation investment strategy to meet the electricity demand from our growing domestic and business base while following a schedule of maintenance, repair and refurbishment on all equipment.”

Delivery of the turbine is scheduled for mid 2011 with an expected completion date of early 2012.

A select tender process will soon be implemented for the installation component of this project.

GE has already installed two turbines at Weddell Power Station, in 2008 and 2009.

The highly efficient machines operate solely on natural gas, ensuring that Weddell emits far less greenhouse gases than other comparable power stations.

Overall, with the addition of this third unit, Weddell will contribute 25 per cent to the capacity of the Darwin-Katherine transmission system.
