Melaleuca Awards embrace artistic talent

15 Feb 2011

The annual Melaleuca Awards, which reward Territorians for being kind to the environment, will this year embrace the artistic talents of amateur photographers who capture creative ideas on water and energy saving and recycling practices at home and in the community.

Power and Water’s Melaleuca Awards, which have run since 2003, increase community awareness of Territorians, groups and businesses who do the right thing by the environment, and recognise, reward and celebrate outstanding achievements for environmental initiatives and projects.

The new amateur photography section offers prizes for the best photographs that capture creative ideas on water, energy or waste saving practices.

Randall Scott, Power and Water's Manager Environmental and Quality Services, said that the Corporation strives to be environmentally sustainable in all its operations, and encourages other Territorians to do the same.

As well, the Corporation has recently added a Mitsubishi i-Miev to its car fleet, which will help determine the potential for replacing petrol driven vehicles over time.

“We are trialling the all-electric Mitsubishi i-Miev to see how well it meets our transport needs,” said Mr Scott.

“The car will be seen around town suitably decked in Melaleuca Awards signage as a reminder to people to do their best and be environmentally aware.”

Businesses, schools and community groups are encouraged to enter the Melaleuca Awards and be rewarded for water and energy saving and recycling achievements.

Winners will receive a Melaleuca Awards trophy, cash prizes or digital camera and all finalists will join Power and Water at the awards ceremony in June. The winning photographs may be used in future campaigns and showcased to the rest of the Territory.

Information on all seven categories including the new photographic competition can be found at powerwater.com.au/melaleuca

Entries close on Friday 29 April and the winners will be announced in early June.
