Power and Water Corporation has officially opened the new Allwright Training Centre at the 19 Mile Depot in Darwin's rural area. The centre will be used to train Networks, Generation and Water Services apprentices as well as Essential Services Operators who are responsible for the provision of power and water services in remote communities.
Power and Water Corporation General Manager Power Networks Bertram Birk said that the new facility, located near Coolalinga, meant that apprentices would not have to travel interstate several times a year for necessary training.
“This new facility has been on our wish list for some time. Apprentices will be able to train on equipment that is specifically used in the Northern Territory in our electricity network. It also means significant savings in the long term for Power and Water Corporation.”
The Allwright Training Centre has 20 full size power poles for apprentices to learn how to work on overhead powerlines, buried testing cables and high voltage testing equipment.
In the near future, Power and Water will employ its own accredited trainers to facilitate courses.
The centre is named after Trevor Allwright, Power and Water’s apprentice coordinator who is retiring at the end of 2011 after 40 years of service.
