A tender has been awarded to significantly upgrade the sewerage infrastructure in the remote township of Borroloola, which will be one of the Territory’s biggest sewerage infrastructure upgrades.Power and Water's General Manager Water Services, Steve McKenzie said that this project will significantly improve the sewerage system for the township as the Borroloola sewage treatment ponds are at capacity and require expansion.
"The construction of a fully reticulated sewerage system in Borroloola will also remove the existing septic tanks which have the potential to overflow during extended wet seasons and cause significant health hazards," said Mr McKenzie.
Local Territory company Steelcon Constructions (NT) has won the contract which includes:
The project will take around 30 weeks to complete with construction set to begin in the 2011 dry season.
"Once the new sewerage infrastructure is in place Power and Water will own and maintain the system. Power and Water has an ongoing sewer rehabilitation program to upgrade existing sewers right across the Northern Territory," said Mr McKenzie.
Due to the topographical constraints around the township, which includes significant amounts of rock, Geotechnical and site survey works were critical to the successful design and construction of this project and contribute towards the high costs of the project and length of time prior to construction.
Steelcon has also committed to working with the Borroloola based Mabunji Aboriginal Resource Association to train and engage local residents to work on the project.
This project will fulfil a 2005 Northern Territory Government election commitment to service Borroloola with a full sewerage strategy to meet existing and future demand loads.
