Progress in Palmerston

09 Nov 2010

Power and Water Corporation has a number of major projects underway in the Palmerston and the rural area that will meet the growing needs of an expanding community.

Archer Zone Substation building was completed last November and electrical works are underway with installation of the high voltage switchyard equipment, protection and control panels, auxiliary equipment and associated cabling.

Archer Zone Substation will provide increased capacity to support the need for additional load with the expansion of the Palmerston Shopping Centre, new office space and apartments in the CBD as well as new suburbs.

The substation will also provide for alternative power supply and capacity to Palmerston at 11kV which provides for increased system security and redundancy, and to service increased load growth.

The new 66,000 volt transmission line from Archer Zone Substation to Hudson Creek Substation will support the increasing demand for electricity for the Palmerston and East Arm Port areas as well as providing a secure supply route from the new Weddell Power Station to the greater Darwin region.

Power and Water is also securing improved water services with a new Palmerston transmission water main now complete.

A new 4.2 kilometre transmission water main extends from Howard Springs Road to Temple Terrace, then along Temple Terrace from the Stuart Highway to Roystonia Avenue.

This water main will meet the region’s increasing demand for water services and a new water tower will also be constructed with work scheduled to begin early next year.

Power and Water will also construct an elevated water storage tower (tank) on the corner of Radford Road and Lambrick Avenue (just off the Stuart Highway) to service growing demand for the new Palmerston subdivisions (Zuccoli, Johnston, etc). The Corporation is about to go out to tender for the design of this tank and it is expected that construction work will begin in the dry season of 2012.

Over the next two to three years a ground level water storage tank will be built to service the Howard Springs and Palmerston areas. The exact location has not yet been determined; however the preferred location is the corner of Howard Springs Road and the Stuart Highway.
