Get Set for the Wet 2010

14 Oct 2010

Although many of us are accustomed to living in a tropical climate we should not become complacent about the potential damage strong winds and flooding can cause during the storm and cyclone season.

Each year, Power and Water Corporation undertakes extensive preparations for the wet season including intensive tree trimming and routine maintenance and upgrades to protect the electricity network and minimise the number and duration of unplanned outages.

Power and Water also provides customers with information to prepare for the storm and cyclone season online and this year is providing outage information to customers via Twitter (follow PowerWaterCorp). Prolonged or significant outages will be notified on Twitter and updates provided on the Unplanned outages page.

For all power outage information customers can still call customer services on 1800 245 092. During a severe storm or cyclone local radio stations will give regular updates.

During the cyclone season it would be wise to have water and household provisions to last up to 72 hours in the event of interruptions to power and water services.

After a severe storm or cyclone, Power and Water’s first priority is to ensure public and employee safety. Crews will be on standby to go out as soon as the storm has passed. Remember - stay away from any fallen powerlines and call the emergency number 1800 245 090.

If you're going away this wet season, empty, clean and unplug refrigerators and freezers to avoid spoilage and switch off and unplug sensitive electrical equipment, this can limit damage if there is an unplanned outage.

If you decide to evacuate in a cyclone, turn your power off at the main switch and your water at the meter.
