Environmental advocates wanted!

Power and Water Corporation is seeking nominations from Territorians for this year’s Melaleuca Awards for Environmental Excellence.
Introducing a new category to the 2010 Awards program, individuals, as well as community groups, businesses and schools are encouraged to nominate.
The Awards were developed in 2003 to recognise and reward outstanding achievement in environmental excellence.
Winning 2009 projects included a water conservation DVD by Alice Springs’ Climate Action Group, a new energy and water efficient school hall at Millner Primary School and a climate-friendly tropical house by Brolga Homes.
Commercial/Industry category winner, Crowne Plaza Alice Springs, reduced its carbon footprint by 420 tonnes of CO2 per year when it joined the Alice Solar City program and installed the largest building mounted solar power system in the southern hemisphere.
The hotel also worked to conserve energy, replacing light bulbs with energy-efficient options and ‘energy eyes’ manage heating and cooling in guestrooms.
General Manager, Adam Glass, Crowne Plaza Alice Springs said winning a Melaleuca Award gave credence to their efforts.
“We are continuing to implement further initiatives,” he said.
“I would encourage others to enter the Melaleuca Awards as it is true recognition and sets the benchmark in not only water and energy savings but sustainability as a whole.”
With six categories available, nominations can be received in the commercial/industry, community, individual, schools and small business sections along with the opportunity to apply for an environment grant.
All category winners, plus the Chairman’s Prize, are eligible for a $1,000 prize and free water audit.
Entries for Power and Water’s Melaleuca Awards close on Friday 7 May 2010, with the presentation of the Awards taking place on the eve of World Environment Day, Friday 4 June 2010, as part of the inaugural Top End Sustainable Living Festival.
