Commissioning of the three 10.9 megawatt engines at Owen Springs Power Station is underway.Upon completion the Owen Springs Power Station will be Australia’s most efficient open-cycle power supply.
The development of the Owen Springs Power Station , located 25km south of Alice Springs, is a part of Power and Water Corporation's commitment to a cleaner environment and security of power supply to Central Australia.
The three high efficiency 12V51/60DF engines and associated network infrastructure is part of a $160 million project that will support new growth for the area.
This significant investment is positioning the Corporation to achieve its goal of minimising emissions to the environment and gaining optimum cost-efficiency.
Eighteen months into a $1.5 billion energy investment—the largest investment in building and upgrading of generation and network infrastructure and equipment in the Territory’s history—the power station will provide additional electricity generation for Alice Springs.
All three 230 tonne engines were shipped by MAN Diesel & Turbo to Darwin, two coming from France and one from Germany, and then transported by road to Alice Springs. The units arrived at Darwin Port, East Arm Wharf and travelled for five days over 1500km with the aid of multiple prime movers.
Power and Water selected the MAN Diesel engines as they offer the highest efficiency in gas-fuelled generation for this size power system.
This significant investment is positioning the Corporation to achieve its goal of minimising emissions to the environment and gaining optimum cost-efficiency.
