Scientists colour water in East Point tidal study

15 Jul 2010

A rose-coloured plume stretching for about half a kilometre may be visible on Darwin Harbour Friday and Saturday mornings as scientists take to the water to conduct a tidal study.

The study is part of the Larrakeyah outfall closure project and Power and Water's plans to extend the East Point outfall.

Power and Water has been working with internationally recognised expert Eric Valentine, who is the Professor of Civil Engineering at Charles Darwin University (CDU), in the design of the new outfall.

Power and Water is coordinating the tidal study with experts from CDU and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).

Tracers will be released into the water about 1km from East Point and then monitored by the team of scientists from boats and a helicopter.

While computer modelling shows rapid dispersion of treated wastewater due to tides in Darwin Harbour, this study will calibrate that model and help determine the best location for the outfall.

The outcomes of the study will be incorporated into the Public Environment Report, which should be completed by the end of this year, as part of the approval process for the outfall extension.
