Desert water re-use project receives engineering award

30 Nov 2010

The Alice Springs Water Reclamation Plant received top honours of Environmental Engineering Excellence in the 2010 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards at a ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra.

The Water Reclamation Plant, a joint project between the Power and Water Corporation, the Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport and the CSIRO, opened in May 2008 and has the capacity to recycle up to 600 mega litres of water a year.

These Awards acknowledge the professionalism and pursuit of excellence by engineers throughout Australia by identifying and promoting engineering excellence.

Power and Water’s General Manager Water Services, Steve McKenzie said that receiving the award was an honour as the Water Reclamation Plant was judged against projects throughout Australia and also from overseas.

“This project makes the best use of valuable water resources in Alice Springs and reduces wastewater overflows,” said Mr McKenzie.

The Alice Springs Water Reclamation Plant uses dissolved air flotation to treat the water for the Water Reuse in the Alice Project. The plant is capable of clarifying and disinfecting effluent drawn from the Alice Springs wastewater stabilisation ponds at a flow rate of three to six million litres per day.

The reclaimed water is then pumped to Soil Aquifer Treatment basins located at the Arid Zone Research Institute, around 6.2km away, where the reclaimed water infiltrates to underground aquifer storage prior to future use in projects such as horticulture. Reclaimed water is also used for irrigation at the nearby Blatherskite Park.

Throughout the judging process, in the Environmental Engineering category, great emphasis is placed on the impact that this project has had on the social and economic life of the community.
