Darwin River Dam full to the brim
7 January
With persistent, heavy rainfall Darwin River Dam continues to experience record high levels for January.
The recent second round of heavy rainfall has pushed dam water levels up to almost a metre over the 44 metre mark.
Power and Water Corporation General Manager Water Services Paul Heaton confirmed this is an exceptional level so early in the year.
“The recent rains experienced this month have yet again increased the dam’s volume - this time to over 99 per cent,” Mr Heaton said.
“We usually see these high levels towards the end of the Wet Season when the dam has had the full complement of Wet Season rains.”
“These rains help to keep our dams full of this precious resource which puts us in a good position to face the Dry Season where we see no rain for months.”
“It is worth noting that these sudden increases in water can stir up the water sediment in the dam and we may start to see coloured or dirty water as a result in our homes.”
“Please be assured that water is routinely monitored and tested to ensure it is safe to drink and use however, if you wish you can run two taps for a few minutes and it should clear.”
Customers with any concerns about their water supply can call Power and Water on 1800 245 092. Read our fact sheet for more information on coloured and dirty water.
Power and Water has recently completed major work on the dam embankment. During the Dry Season, further works will commence to raise the spillway by 1.3 metres to take full advantage of our next Wet Season rainfall. These works will ultimately increase the dam capacity by 20 per cent.
