Essential Services Operators - Essential to Remote Communities

More than 70 remote communities across the Territory rely on Essential Services Operators (ESO’s) to keep water, power and sewerage services operating.

This week (12-14 May) 30 Indigenous and non Indigenous ESOs from the Central Desert, Barkly and McDonnell Shires which includes the communities of Ampilatwatja, Ikuntji, Ltyentye Apurte, Ti Tree, Ntaria, Docker River, Alpurrurulam, Yuelamu, Willowra, Atitjere, Nyirripi, Kintore, Canteenn Creek, Engawala, Elliott, Imanpa, Papunya and Finke are attending a three day workshop in Alice Springs.

Just some of the issues ESOs have been instrumental in managing recently include an airlift of 41,000 litres of emergency fuel supplies into the flooded Alpurrurulam Community and shutting down the Mt Liebig Power Station to protect the power station and ensure community safety during flooding to the area.

The ESO course covers such aspects as safety, electrical basics, electrical generation basics, water infrastructure, sampling, quality, planning and mechanical information, remote sewer and sewer pump stations, ground maintenance, fire extinguisher use, LV and HV work in the pole yard, metering and Community liaison.
