Energy wise - Add a degree or two and save $$

18 Nov 2009

Power and Water is encouraging customers to increase the thermostat on their air conditioning unit a degree or two to save money on their electricity bills.

When it gets hot in the Territory, air conditioning use can account for more than half of all power consumption which spikes during peak times, or between 3pm and 8pm.

Not only is this a strain on our pocket but it impacts on our electricity system and the environment.

Retail General Manager Jim Bamber said it is now time to think about efficient ways we can all keep cool during the hottest time of the year and save money.

"Even by increasing the temperature of an air conditioning unit by one degree can save you 10 per cent in running costs,” said Mr Bamber.

“To improve your chance of saving we recommend you turn your air conditioning unit to 24 degrees and run a fan,” he said.

Power and Water is providing Territorians with simple practical steps to reduce power bills during the hottest time of year.

There are alternatives to cranking up the air conditioner and running it at full power.

Go to Power and Water’s Virtual Energy Audit to discover ways you can make small changes that don’t impact on your lifestyle and save you money and help the environment.

The air conditioning energy wise campaign is part of the Get Set for the Wet launched recently in the Top End to remind residents to get ready for the storm and cyclone season.
