As part of the design phase for the new Owen Springs Power Station, a site survey has identified that the Brewer Estate potential flood levels are higher than previously assessed. The impact of these findings is the site will need to be raised by up to one metre. This has delayed site preparation works for construction of the power station and will prevent the moving of the Taurus gas turbine generator from Ron Goodin Power Station in October as previously planned.
Power and Water Southern Region Manager, Alan Whyte said ‘The Taurus generator has to be safely located and secured on the site before it can feed power into the network and back to Alice Springs. Accordingly it will now not be moved until after summer.”
“We understand that a number of residents living near the Ron Goodin Power Station have been waiting for the Taurus to be moved to the new power station.
“To maintain good faith and noting its relatively low capacity and efficiency, the Taurus will be temporarily taken out of service from the end of October until it can be moved next year. In that period, the unit will only be operated if an extreme supply emergency occurs.”
Power and Water is now scheduling both the Titan and Taurus generators to be moved next year, after the summer, peak load period.
