Residents in the Darwin and Palmerston areas maybe noticing discoloured water over the last couple of weeks, particularly when filling the bathtub or other basins. The yellow colour is the result from recent rainfall and disturbance in the Darwin River Dam reservoir. Rainfall for October to date is 125mm, which is more than twice the median rainfall of 52mm.
During the transition from the dry season and into the wet season, naturally occurring iron and manganese which are normally contained at the base of the reservoir are sometimes drawn into the water supply. This is typical of all water supply reservoirs. The presence of iron and manganese is not a health concern, but can concern people, cause some staining, and may give the water a slight metallic taste.
Other than being disinfected and fluoridated, Darwin enjoys one of the purest water supplies, from an unfiltered, protected catchment area. The result of this natural supply system is that water colour cannot always be controlled.
The water supply and network is continually monitored and tested and despite the appearance of discoloured water, the quality of the water meets public health standards. Power and Water are currently modifying water off takes at the reservoir to reduce discoloured water, and in the absence of further unusual weather it is anticipated the discoloured water will reduce significantly over the next week or two.
