Contingency planning for power supply, northern suburbs

As part of contingency planning to cover any major outage as a result of the Casuarina Zone Substation running at reduced capacity until essential repairs can be carried out, Power and Water is continuing with generator installations across Darwin’s northern suburbs.

Generators at the following schools have now been connected and running independent of the
main power grid, enabling approx. 10 MW of load to bypass the Casuarina Zone Substation:
  • Henbury School
  • St Paul's Primary
  • Alawa Primary
  • Jingili Primary
  • Wagaman Primary
  • Wanguri Primary
  • Nakara Primary
  • Nightcliff Primary
  • Millner Primary
  • Sanderson Middle School
  • Dripstone Middle School
  • Casuarina Senior College
  • Nightcliff Middle School

Preparations for the generator at Essington School will be completed and tested after school hours. Connection for this site is scheduled for mid-week.

Installation of generators placed in five key locations within the northern suburbs will continue this week at:

  • Jingili
  • Brinkin
  • Rapid Creek
  • Wagaman
  • Lee Point

These generators won’t come into service unless there is a major outage or to undertake repairs to the damaged switchboard, if necessary, at the substation.
