Low flying choppers will scout high voltage power lines as part of a new initiative by the Power and Water Corporation.Aeropower has been secured to undertake the specialist work across Darwin, Katherine and Pine Creek.
The Queensland-based company specialises in servicing the electrical industry in airborne maintenance, using helicopters as a platform to patrol, inspect, construct, string, wash and perform live-line repairs and maintenance.
“Using choppers has a range of advantages to other methods of manual inspections and maintenance,’’ General Manager Power Networks Bertram Birk said.
“Aerial inspections are faster, more cost effective, and allow maintenance and inspection without having to turn off electricity to our customers.’’
Specialists are able to detect issues such as corroded bolts, damaged insulators, and power lines damaged by lightning. Repairs and maintenance can also be done from the choppers.
