The relocation of the Titan and Taurus generators from Alice Springs’ Ron Goodin Power Station to Brewer Estate is expected to be complete by October 2008.The distance of Brewer Estate from the town and the consequent need to provide 66kV transmission links, as well as the need for a new gas supply, have added to the complexity of the project.
The Power and Water Corporation is engaging an engineering consultant to provide proposals for site layout, gas pipeline route and transmission line/ switchyard options. The proposals will be received by the end of June.
‘‘By late 2007 clearances and approvals to begin work are expected to be in place,’’ Power and Water General Manager Generation John Linton said.
“To proceed, Power and Water has to secure easements for a natural gas pipeline, 66Kv transmission lines and land for the Norris Bell zone substation.”
Local businesses are set to win significant work with the project. A tender for site infrastructure that includes site security, water, power, civil works and fuel storage will be advertised in August. In late 2007, associated works will begin, with an anticipated completion in mid 2008.
In recognition of the extended time it takes for supply of 66kV transformers –
12 months – those needed for the project will be ordered in June 2007. Their delivery, erection and commissioning are on the critical path for moving the Titan and Taurus units to Brewer.
Milestones for the project expected to be achieved by mid 2008 include:
Mr Linton said relocation and recommissioning of the Taurus and Titan gas turbine sets to the PWC Brewer Power Station is expected to coincide with period of lower system demand after the July/ August winter peak, but is also dependent on the in-service date of the transformers and 66kV transmission link. Estimated completion is by October 2008.
The installation and commissioning of a new 8MW generating set at the PWC Brewer Power Station is also estimated to be complete by the end of November 2008.
