Owen Springs Power Station Update
22 January 2009 - Media Release
The Owen Springs Power Station at the Brewer Estate south of Alice Springs is the site for the relocation of the Taurus and Titan gas turbine generators from Ron Goodin Power Station initially and the installation of new generation plant in the future to meet growth in the region.
As other generation plant currently located at Ron Goodin comes to the end of its lifecycle it will be replaced at Owen Springs.
Over the past few months, earthworks have been taking place to provide the thousands of tons of fill required to bring the foundations for the new power station up about a metre. Power and Water has been monitoring the progress of the civil works and has visited the quarry supplying the fill material.
MAN Diesel Australia, which was awarded a $60 million contract to design and construct the power station, have also appointed a site manager and established a site office. As well as construction of the main power station infrastructure, the contract includes the supply, installation and commissioning of two 10.9 megawatt dual fuel, diesel/gas generator sets.
To support the development of the new power station, Power and Water has also committed $16.7 million to establish a 66kV power transmission system. This will comprise a new switchyard at Owen Springs Power Station, including two transformers, an expanded switchyard at Lovegrove Substation located on Lovegrove Drive, including another two new transformers, and two 66kV transmission lines between the two switchyards.
A pipeline and metering station to bring gas to the new power station is well advanced and is scheduled for testing shortly.
A contract has also been let to transfer the Taurus and Titan gas turbines to Owen Springs Power Station as soon as infrastructure and temporary connection arrangements are in place. Both the Titan and Taurus generators are still scheduled to be moved after the summer, peak load period.
In an undertaking to resident's nearby to the Ron Goodin Power Station, Power and Water have not run the Taurus generator unnecessarily during the usually high peak summer period to minimise noise until these gas turbines can be moved this year.
