Million-dollar contract to improve Ilparpa water main awarded
Media Release 01 June 2009
A million dollar contract has been awarded to local firm Asplum Pty. Ltd. by Power and Water Corporation to duplicate 1.6 kilometres of the Ilparpa water main, an important part of Alice Springs infrastructure.
The four kilometre long Ilparpa water main was constructed in 1986 by a private developer and the asset gifted to Power and Water. However, since that time there have been multiple problems with the main due to poor construction techniques and the need for a high-pressure supply to provide enough water to the subdivision of a bout 137 properties.
Alan Whyte, Regional Manager, said We have nursed this system along for many years but need to bring it up to our standards. Water mains are under quite a lot stress from changes in weather, the ground drying out or flooding and the sheer volume and pressure of water it continually carries.
While our crews are despatched as quickly as possible to do repairs, upgrading the Ilparpa main will provide a much more reliable system for our customers and stop the waste of precious water each time it happens.
The duplication of the water main pipe past the area of inundation from the Ilparpa Swamp will enable maintenance of the water main at a lower pressure. This will reduce the likelihood of breakages, the cost of pumping and the risk of cross contamination during wet weather filling of the Ilparpa Swamp.
