Melaluca Awards now open

12 February 2009 - Media Release

Power and Water Corporation invites community groups, schools, businesses and individuals with a great idea or project to protect the environment, to enter the 2009 Melaleuca Awards for environmental excellence.

Last year’s entries included some great initiatives that made a real impact in the community. Schools category winner for 2008 was Mataranka Primary School. Their project involved the senior class taking over running the canteen and reducing the amount of rubbish to landfill. It was so successful it’s been extended across the whole of the school and integrated into classroom studies this year.

Commercial/Industry category winner 2008, Darwin International Airport and Greening Australia NT, created a 15-hectare conservation reserve on airport grounds. A three-year project, thousands of trees were planted as a wildlife corridor along Rapid Creek with an erosion and weed control, rubbish removal and fire management program implemented.

Established in 2003, the Melaleuca Awards have a number of categories - community, commercial/industry, small business and schools. All category winners, plus the Chairman’s prize, are eligible for a $1,000 prize and a free water audit. Separate submissions can also be made for an environment project grant.

Entries for this year’s Power and Water Melaleuca Awards close on May 15 and the winners will be announced at a presentation on June 17. Information and entry forms are available online or from any Power and Water Customer Service Centre.
