Local industry encouraged to participate in Stage 3 of Weddell Power Station development
18 June 2009 - Media Release
A briefing session by Power and Water next week will provide local industry an overview of the third stage of the Weddell Power Station and encourage them to participate in the project.
During stage one and two more than 40 Territory companies contributed to the project in areas such as plumbing and pipe work, electrical works and major civil works. At the briefing for stage three, to be held at the Ben Hammond Complex at 2.00pm on Tuesday 23 June, local industry will have the opportunity to ask about details of the project.
With tenders to be called for shortly for this stage, stages one and two of the $126.6 million power station were completed and commissioned late last year making Weddell the largest electricity generation project in the Northern Territory in last 20 years.
Stage three of the development of Weddell Power Station will involve recovering and using the exhaust heat of the two gas turbines already installed to generate further power.
In addition, major works packages will cover contracts to integrate the current Weddell Power Station control system into the Channel Island control system, auxiliary electrical services including connection to 66kV switchyard and for the augmentation of the current water demineralisation plant.
The new power station is set to contribute 30 megawatt more capacity to the Darwin-Palmerston-Katherine supply when the third generator comes online in 2010/11.
