Darwin River Dam overflows

13 February 2009 - Media Release

Darwin River Dam is at ‘full supply level’ and flowing over the spillway. As in previous years when the dam has spilled over, an increase in the flow rate of the Darwin River downstream of the dam will make road crossings more hazardous and drivers and residents in the area need to take extra care.

A full reservoir at this time of year is good, but using water efficiently all year round to ensure we have water for years to come is better. Darwin people use up to three times more water than in other capital cities across Australia and this puts undue stress on the supply especially during the long Top End dry season. Ensuring an adequate supply is critical because the Top End is not immune to climate change or future drought conditions.

Power and Water will begin construction to raise the level of the spillway at Darwin River Dam by 1.3 metres this dry season at a cost of over $10 millionThe dam, constructed in 1972 and designed to supply 200,000 people, is the main drinking water supply for Darwin and surrounding area.

The project to increase the dam’s capacity is part of a $1 billion asset investment and maintenance programme being rolled out across Power and Water’s services over the next five years
