2012 Melaleuca Award winners announced
13 Jul 2012Power and Water Corporation Managing Director Andrew Macrides was proud to recognise and reward the winners of this year’s Melaleuca Awards at a ceremony held at Myilly Point Heritage Precinct in Darwin last night.
"This is the tenth year we have recognised environmental excellence in the community," said Andrew Macrides.
"We think it is great testament to our ongoing commitment to the community that we received so many submissions this year.
"The judges also impressed upon me the calibre and quality of submissions and said it was great endorsement for the standing these awards have in the community.
"This year we refreshed the categories to highlight key areas of environmental focus on energy, water and natural environment protection and enhancement.
The winners, who each receive cash prize money, a certificate and a trophy, are:
Individual Category Award
Emma Lupin – Promoting local food, productive gardening and sustainable urban living
Energy Conservation Award – Small Organisation
Alice Springs Reptile Centre – Aiming to become 100 per cent carbon neutral
Energy Conservation Award – Large Organisation
Charles Darwin University – Building Management Systems for Energy Efficiency
Natural Environment Protection and Enhancement Award
Ludmilla Creek Landcare Group – An urban community based environmental catchment management and engagement project
Recycling and Waste Management Award
Colemans Printing – Go for Green – Sustainability initiative developed to lift the business’ overall environmental performance
Water Conservation Award
The Plantsmith – Development of The Plantsmith nursery – A wholesale plant production nursery based on ecological growing principles
Eco School – Environmentally Friendly Gardens Award
Alawa Primary School – Tropical Kitchen Garden Program – Teaching children about the natural world and how to care for it through growing and harvesting seasonal produce
Cross Category Award
Environment Centre NT & Nursery and Garden Industry NT – Increased awareness of sustainable practices at the combined Tropical Garden Spectacular & Top End Sustainable Living Festival 2011 event
Chairman’s Encouragement Award
Don Duggan – Maningrida Beautification Program – Special acknowledgment to Don who focused on enhancing and beautifying the community while providing education and employment opportunities
