Most communities have an Essential Services Operator who works to keep the water supply operating day-to-day. ESOs work with Power and Water's central office to ensure testing, maintenance and upgrades are carried out as needed.
Community water supplies are cleaned by disinfection. Some use chlorination, some use ultra violet light and some use both.
The disinfection level in the water is checked every day to check that it is working properly. The supply is further tested weekly or monthly to verify the disinfection is adequate and the tanks and pipes are in good working order.
The supply is tested routinely through the year to monitor the chemistry of the water source so we can monitor any changes.
Results of water testing are compared to the Australian Drinking Guidelines, which are not mandatory but do provide a reference for what is good drinking water.
Power and Water's water quality team works to ensure the water is both safe and pleasant to drink.
