It’s four am in the morning, still dark and the Power and Water crews in Katherine are again patrolling powerlines and removing dead bats that have clustered around powerline insulators and caused an outage. Line crews have been called out 25 times since just last Thursday, with the Mataranka electricity feeder being the most affected by bats.

This new 66000 volt transmission line from Archer Zone Substation to Hudson Creek Substation will help meet the increasing demand for electricity for the Palmerston and East Arm Port areas as well as providing a secure supply route from the new Weddell Power Station to the greater Darwin region.

Territorians will now be able to take advantage of a Solar Hot Water Retrofit Rebate program being launched across the NT today (Sunday 28 June 2009). The Rebate program provides a financial incentive to pre-existing homes in the Northern Territory to replace electric systems with solar hot water systems by ofsetting some of the costs associated with plumbing and roof structure requirements. Being suspended more than 50 metres in the air is all in a day’s work for our crews. Take for example work last week to replace equipment on a 132kV high voltage line, 600 metres across the Elizabeth River in a special bosun’s chair fastened to the powerline.

A joint maintenance and training exercise will take place more than 50 metres above the Elizabeth River today when Power and Water employees will hang suspended in a powered bosun’s chair on one of the 132kV high voltage lines.
