Every year in Australia’s tropical north we are subjected to cyclones, severe storms and strong winds often with driving rain and many lightning strikes.
Although many of us are accustomed to living in a tropical climate we should not become complacent about the potential damage strong winds and flooding can cause during the storm and cyclone season. Prepare now and be safe.
The Territory’s extreme climatic conditions can impact electricity and water infrastructure; affect power supply and, potentially, water and sewerage services.
Each year, Power and Water Corporation undertakes extensive preparations with crews working on intensive tree trimming programs and routine maintenance and upgrades to protect the network and utility infrastructure. Interruptions to power are expected during the Wet Season, so this work is to minimise the number and duration of unplanned outages.
Throughout the dry season Power and Water crews inspect powerlines, making repairs and improvements to ensure the network infrastructure is robust and ready for the wet season. Crews also conduct extensive checks and repairs of our water and sewerage infrastructure.
All major power stations have had extensive refits and refurbishments during the dry to ensure demand can be met during peak periods.
During the cyclone season it would be wise to have water and household provisions to last up to 72 hours in the event of interruptions to power and water services. If you're going away this wet season, empty, clean and unplug refrigerators and freezers to avoid spoilage and switch off and unplug sensitive electrical equipment. This can limit damage if there is an unplanned outage.
After a severe storm or cyclone, Power and Water's first priority is to ensure public and employee safety. Crews will be on standby to go out as soon as the storm has passed - remember - stay away from any fallen powerlines and call the emergency number 1800 245 090.
