Cyclones, Storms and Floods Centre
Every year in the Territory our communities, towns and cities are affected by severe storms and the possibility of flooding and cyclones. Luckily most will pass by causing little or no damage, but we can never be complacent.
Be prepared for the storm season by seeing our Get Set 4 the Wet section
In the event of a cyclone or major flooding event, we have prepared messages that will be broadcast on local radio stations providing important information. This website also provides a range of information and links that you may find useful.
It’s a fact in the Top End that storms during the Wet Season cause power outages. With more than 30,000 lightning strikes a year, serious damage can be done to our power network.
We’ve worked hard to get our response time to restore power faster than anywhere else in Australia - this includes waiting for it to be safe before our crews go out. In some cases you may need to call an electrician before we can reconnect you so please see getting reconnected.
Flash flooding can also occur during monsoonal downpours causing additional hazards, especially if powerlines have been brought down by the storm and if sewerage systems overflow.
