Meters

The meter is what we use to measure the amount of electricity or water used at a home, school, or business premises. Different types of meters are used for different facilities. We provide a range of metering services to commercial customers.

Types of water meters

	Volumetric meter - 20mm This is the most common domestic meter in the Territory. Volumetric meters are like a container that fills up and empties out a known amount of water. This is used to measure the total quantity of water used, over a period of time. Other sizes in this type of meter are: 25mm, 32mm, 40mm and 50mm (used in irrigation applications).
	Helix meter – 80mm This meter is most commonly used on irrigation applications. It works like a water windmill, measuring the rate of water passing. Other sizes of helix meters are: 50mm (used in portable meters), 100mm and 150mm.
	Common commercial meter – combination meter Power and Water has about 1000 of these installed on the largest commercial properties. It operates on a combination of technology, volumetric and helix metering.

Types of electricity meters

Standard Domestic Meter - These meters, also known as the standard purpose induction watthour meter, have over a long period of time gained a reputation for accuracy and long term reliability. They perform extremely well under adverse environmental conditions and have been the backbone of electricity metering in Australia for well over the last 50 years.

Electronic Meters – an electronic meter can provide more information, and is therefore more commonly used on large commercial premises. They are used for time-of-use metering, as they can be programmed to read the time of day or night as well as consumption. Metering data can be downloaded and charted for commercial customers, enabling them to understand and improve the management of their power consumption. Contact us to find out more.

Pre-payment meter – these electricity meters use a power token, and are used in many remote communities. There are no connection fees, no bill surprises – and you use as much or as little power as you like. Please note: there are certain conditions to be met before you can change over to a prepayment meter.

The current tariff for a prepayment meter is .1714c per kWh (GST inc).
