Trade waste

Managing Trade Waste

Liquid or liquid borne waste generated from any industry, business, trade or manufacturing process.

Objectives:

The primary objectives of the Trade Waste Management System are to:

  • prevent injury to, and to maintain the health and safety of staff and contractors;
  • minimise impact on the environment from treated effluent discharge;
  • protect the sewerage system conveyancing and treatment infrastructure;
  • promote waste minimisation practices;
  • ensure the quality of trade waste accepted will not adversely affect the opportunity for the reuse of bio-solids and treated effluent; and
  • comply with legislative requirements.

The Trade Waste Management System was introduced in January 2002 to minimise waste going into our sewerage system. It is based on the user pays principle, and will be self-regulated by businesses. Managing trade waste in this way brings the Northern Territory in line with national water reform initiatives.

Power and Water aims to work with businesses to ease the introduction of this new System. Please read the Guidelines for On-site Pre-treatment to understand the requirements of the Trade Waste Management System.

The Trade Waste Code establishes the criteria under which a Trade Waste Approval will be granted to allow the discharge of trade waste to sewer.

For approval to discharge to sewer, complete and lodge the Trade Waste Application form.
