Weddell Power Station

Weddell Power Station is one of the largest electricity generation projects in the Northern Territory in more than 20 years.

The project added two 43MW gas generating units to the Darwin-Katherine electricity grid in 2008-2009.

A tender for a third gas turbine at Weddell Power Station has been awarded to GE.

Once installed, the combined Darwin-Katherine generation capacity will increase to 440 megawatts.

Delivery of the turbine is scheduled for mid 2011 with an expected completion date of early 2012.

This makes Weddell a $124 milion project and to date, more than 40 Territory companies have contributed.

The highly efficient machines operate solely on natural gas, ensuring that Weddell emits far less greenhouse gases than other comparable power stations.

Overall, with the addition of this third unit, Weddell will contribute 25 per cent to the capacity of the Darwin-Katherine transmission system.
