Weddell Power Station

Weddell Power Station, the largest electricity generation project in the Northern Territory in the last 20 years is nearing the completion of stage one – two 43MW generating units.

The power station is state of the art and in its current configuration has a life span of 25 years, which might be extended if required. Weddell Power Station will add approximately 30% of power generation capacity to the Darwin-Katherine interconnected power system. The highly efficient lean burn machines burning natural gas ensure that Weddell Power Station emits far less greenhouse gases than other comparable power stations.

The first generator has been synchronised to the grid and completed its load, system and reliability testing.

A second generator is due for completion in late 2008. All major erection works for the second generator have been completed. Installation and commissioning works are progressing well.

Within the next five years it is planned to add a third generator to Weddell Power Station.
